A Physically-Based Ultrasonic Image Model for Inference of Shape

Our image model incorporates three fundamental components of image formation: the system characteristics via a 3-D PSF, the gross surface shape, and the surface microstructure. This comprehensive physical model permits simulation of individual images. It also provides the mathematical basis for a probabilistic representation using pixel-based statistics and allowing the construction of an image-wide data likelihood. The data likelihood enables Bayesian inference of underlying characteristics such as the surface pose.
